Jazan Shrimp Season Returns, Bolstering Fisheries Sustainability and Food Security

 As September 1 arrives, the Red Sea waters off the coast of Jazan Region are once again welcoming the shrimp fishing season, which will run for seven months through the end of March 2027.
 One of the region's most prominent marine seasons, the annual shrimp season highlights both fishermen's economic activity and marine products' importance in strengthening food security and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
 More than 120 fishing boats are set to take part in this year's season after Jazan's branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture completed preparations for its launch. The preparations included putting in place the services and regulatory procedures for fishermen and enabling them to carry out their activities in accordance with approved regulations and requirements.
 The significance of Jazan's fisheries sector is reflected in the scale of its marine catch and production. The region recorded a total catch of 10,639 tons of various fish species, while shrimp catches reached 953 tons. Shrimp production from aquaculture projects also amounted to 2,234 tons, highlighting the diversity of marine food sources and the role of both capture fisheries and aquaculture in supporting food security.
 Director-General of the ministry's Jazan branch Ahmed Al Majthal told the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that the branch has completed all preparations and services required for the start of the shrimp fishing season.
 He highlighted the branch's support for fishermen, including completing the procedures needed for them to begin their activities at the start of the season and coordinating with relevant authorities to issue seasonal shrimp fishing licenses through the Naama portal.
 The shrimp season in Jazan reflects the integration of regulation, fisheries production, and aquaculture in an effort to develop the Kingdom's fisheries sector, protect the Red Sea's marine resources, and maximize the economic benefits of the sea.
 It also supports the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting promising sectors, strengthening food security and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
