Madinah Central Area: Model for Sustainable Urban Development Serving Millions of Visitors
Madinah's central area is the city’s main attraction and home to the Prophet’s Mosque. It features a distinctive urban character that blends Islamic heritage with modern development. The area includes wide plazas, shaded walkways, luxury hotels, and diverse markets and restaurants reflecting global cultures. It has become a vibrant destination offering visitors a rich experience of Islamic cultural diversity.
Millions of visitors from around the world come each year to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque, particularly during Hajj and after performing Umrah. Many also visit Madinah’s religious sites and historic landmarks.
With visitor numbers rising, the central area continues to undergo major urban development. Projects under Saudi Vision 2030 aim to strengthen sustainability and improve quality of life. Plans emphasize an integrated approach that preserves the site’s sanctity while enhancing urban design, facilities, and plazas to improve comfort and safety for visitors.
One key project is Rua Al Madinah, the largest development in the region. It spans about 1.5 million square meters east of the Prophet’s Mosque. The project will include more than 47,000 hotel rooms, commercial spaces, museums, and cultural zones. It also incorporates smart technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, environmental monitoring, energy-efficient systems, interactive wayfinding, security systems, and sustainable transport solutions.
The central area also connects to surrounding neighborhoods through wide plazas that ease movement and access. Projects include the Quba Walking Trail, linking the Prophet’s Mosque with Quba Mosque through a direct pedestrian route. The corridor features electric carts, bicycle paths, and service and seating areas. Together, these developments form a model of sustainable urban planning that preserves Islamic heritage while applying modern innovation to serve visitors year-round.
