Ministry of Hajj and Umrah Launches Documentary on Crowd Engineering Showcasing Saudi Experience in Managing the World’s Largest Human Gathering
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has launched a new documentary on crowd engineering, highlighting the operational and knowledge-based system behind managing the movement of pilgrims during the Hajj season. The film showcases the planning and organizational efforts that help regulate the movement of millions of pilgrims between the holy sites.
The documentary highlights the development of the Hajj system in the fields of planning and crowd management, supported by the Kingdom’s leadership. It also highlights the level of integration achieved among government and service entities working to serve pilgrims within the objectives of the Pilgrim Experience Program, one of the programs of Saudi Vision 2030.
A number of leaders and experts from the Hajj system participate in the documentary, offering specialized perspectives on Saudi Arabia’s experience in crowd management. These include Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfig Al-Rabiah and Director of the General Directorate of Public Security Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al-Bassami. They discuss the transformations witnessed by the system and the scientific and technical foundations on which Hajj crowd-management plans are based.
The documentary reviews the scale of the system supporting the Hajj season, noting that 1,707,301 male and female pilgrims from more than 165 nationalities arrived in Makkah this year over six days. The pilgrims’ journey relies on an integrated operational system involving more than 441,049 participants from government entities, the private sector, and the nonprofit sector, in addition to 26,701 volunteers working in continuous coordination to serve pilgrims.
The film also sheds light on operational models used in crowd management, coordination mechanisms among relevant entities, and the role of data and indicators in supporting field decision-making. It reflects the scale of Saudi Arabia’s efforts in managing the world’s largest seasonal human gathering and presents an analytical view of Hajj crowd management as an advanced operational experience built on accumulated expertise and continuous development.
The documentary was produced as part of the ministry’s efforts to highlight the knowledge and organizational dimensions of the Hajj system and raise awareness of the scale of institutional work behind crowd management. It also reflects the global position Saudi Arabia has achieved in serving pilgrims.
