New Initiative to Enhance Makkah's Urban Landscape through Architectural Heritage

The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites launched the "Makkah and Holy Sites Architecture" initiative to strengthen the connection to the region's rich historical and cultural architectural heritage, ultimately enhancing the urban landscape and quality of life.

The initiative introduces innovative urban guidelines, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, and promotes practical, sustainable solutions that integrate both the aesthetic and functional aspects of urban spaces and blocks. The framework will facilitate the effective application of Makkah and Holy Sites Architecture in building facades, empowering relevant authorities and design firms to develop optimal solutions and technical practices.

The commission said the initiative aims to elevate the urban structure of Makkah and the holy sites by fostering architectural development in growth centers, encouraging sustainable design practices, and establishing a guiding methodology for achieving urban excellence and improving the quality of life for all residents. This will be accomplished by defining a distinct architectural identity rooted in cultural and environmental heritage, while also embracing future developments.

The initiative emphasizes preserving Makkah's natural features, including its mountain peaks and foothills, and integrating these elements into designs. It will also provide clear guidance to designers of both current and future development projects on the methods and approaches for developing the architectural composition of their work.
